TMF Consultant Contributes to Public Health Data Standards Consortium White Paper

TMF Consultant Dave McCord co-authored a white paper released by the Public Health Data Standards Consortium. The white paper, "Building a Roadmap for Health Information Systems Interoperability for Public Health," is part of an effort to stimulate a dialog on standardizing health information exchanges within the public health community.

Mr. McCord's contributions to the white paper were focused on the interoperability of personal health records between public health and consumer health informatics. According to a release from the PHDSC:

"The Public Health Data Standards Consortium (PHDSC), with the support of Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), launched a PHDSC Public Health Task Force to engage the public health community in a dialogue with health information technology (HIT) vendors to achieve two key goals. The first is to assure that the work processes and data needs of public health stakeholders are well understood and agreed upon by stakeholders themselves. The second is to document the common components of such work processes, identifying the needs of all public health stakeholders for interoperability among clinical Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and Public Health information systems (EHR-PH Systems). The resulting White Paper successfully engaged over 70 contributors to describe public health and population health practices of governmental public health agencies that require health information exchanges with clinical care; challenges of the current information exchange processes; and the vision for the interoperable EHR-PH information exchanges. The White Paper provides two detailed examples of public health programs (immunization and cancer registries) in the format of the IHE Technical Tasks for Information Exchanges. It also identifies other programs for the development of technical specifications for interoperable systems in the future for public health, research, and quality domains, e.g., chronic care, personal health record, surveys, trauma, pharmacovigilance, etc.. The White Paper serves as a framing document for planning public health activities at IHE. The IHE Quality, Research & Public Health Domain endorses the work of the Public Health Data Standards Consortium."
